FEMA Extends Maui Wildfire Housing Assistance

Survivors of last year’s devastating Maui wildfires will receive an additional year of housing assistance from FEMA. This support comes as the community continues to recover from the catastrophic August 8 fire in Lahaina, which killed at least 102 people and displaced around 12,000 residents.

The recovery has been challenging, with housing remaining a critical issue. FEMA has focused on providing rental assistance for those without insurance, directly leasing homes for over 1,200 households and offering subsidies to an additional 500. Many of these rentals are located in Kihei, approximately 25 miles from Lahaina. Survivors have faced instability, often moving multiple times from hotel rooms to temporary housing.

Originally set to expire in February, FEMA has now extended housing assistance until February 10, 2026. This extension is particularly important as a recent report from the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization highlighted rising unemployment and poverty levels among wildfire survivors, with nine out of ten respondents indicating they lost their homes.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green expressed gratitude to FEMA for their continued support, stating, “The ongoing support from FEMA and our federal partners has been crucial for the recovery of our people.” He recalled President Biden’s commitment to stand by the community for as long as needed.

Netherlands Adds Streets to Solve Housing Shortage

Each site is designed to add around 50 housing units over 8 acres, minimizing costs and time compared to large-scale developments. However, this incremental approach faces challenges, such as potential backlash from residents concerned about losing their countryside views and the possibility of higher housing prices.
